This time, Trinity Health Of New England (THONE) got it done before time ran out.
The health system announced Tuesday afternoon that it had reached an agreement with Aetna Inc., a CVS Health company, on a new multi-year agreement. The deal was reached before the previous three-year contract expired at midnight Tuesday.
“We are pleased to share Aetna … and Trinity Health Of New England have reached a multi-year agreement that will allow our valued patients and members to maintain the in-network access to the Trinity Health Of New England hospitals, facilities, and health care providers they trust,” the company said in an emailed statement.
Phillip Blando, a spokesman for Aetna, emailed a similar statement, adding that Aetna is “thankful for everyone’s patience and support as we worked together to reach a fair agreement.”
The deal ended a tumultuous year of contract negotiations with insurance companies for THONE, which had seen three previous agreements expire before new deals were reached. Those deals were with Wallingford-based Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Bloomfield-based Cigna and UnitedHealthcare.
The contract with Aetna is for commercial and Medicare Advantage plans in Connecticut and 15 other states where Trinity Health participates. The other affected states include California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Oregon and Pennsylvania.
In Connecticut, the contract affects patients at St. Francis Hospital and Mt. Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital in Hartford, St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury and Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford Springs, as well as other THONE facilities and providers. It also affects Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Before the deal was reached, a THONE spokesperson had said the health system was “working diligently to resolve the negotiations” and was “making progress with Aetna to reach a fair agreement that appropriately covers the true cost of the care we provide to our patients who have Aetna commercial and Medicare Advantage health plans.”
Aetna Inc. is owned by CVS Health Corp., which is based in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and has struggled financially this year. CVS Health last week announced additional layoffs at Aetna, following the announcement in October that it would cut “2,900 corporate roles this year.”
