Recently shuttered manufacturing company Rex Forge in Southington had been cited numerous times for pollution incidents in recent years, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
Officials from DEEP’s remediation division attended a site visit at the forging factory within the last month to discuss clean-up measures required when a property is about to be sold.
The manufacturer, which has been a fixture in Southington for almost 160 years, informed the state Department of Labor on Feb. 3 that it intended to close its door with the loss of 103 jobs.
The closure follows the loss of its sole customer, Ohio-based Dana Corp.
“We met with their leadership about a proposed schedule to complete environmental investigation and implement cleanup measures under a Property Transfer Act obligation,” DEEP spokesperson Will Healey said in an email. “Rex representatives mentioned financial constraints, but we were able to find a reasonable pathway forward at the site meeting. Rex representatives thanked us for visiting and agreed with our request to change out oil containment booms - which was done.”
DEEP records show that the company has had at least 12 spill incidents going back to 1996. The most recent reported incident was in May of 2024.
Rex Forge’s Atwater Street factory abuts the Quinnipiac River in the Plantsville section of Southington.
