Manufacturer TRUMPF Inc. will open a new $40 million “smart factory” May 20 in Farmington at its North American headquarters.
The 55,800-square-foot advanced manufacturing facility will expand local production of machine tools for the company.
Trumpf says the plant will also act as a demonstration facility where other manufacturers can see applications of automation, connectivity and data-driven production.
“The future demands smarter, more connected and more competitive manufacturing. Now is the time for manufacturers to elevate their production methods and further develop their workforce,” said TRUMPF Inc. President and CEO Lutz Labisch.
Capabilities include laser cutting, bending and punching machines, a powder coating system, welding and grinding, as well as office and conference room space, and a drive-through truck bay.
TRUMPF will use it to make parts for its machine tools, used by manufacturers to make metal components for cars, aircraft, agricultural machinery, data center cabinets, fitness equipment and a wide variety of other products.
It showcases real-life applications of automated and connected manufacturing to thousands of manufacturers who visit the Connecticut campus each year to explore technology customized for their own production needs. Trumpf said.
The smart factory is part of an ongoing “local-for-local” strategy for production in Connecticut, where the company has manufactured since 1974. A subsidiary of the privately held European TRUMPF Group, TRUMPF Inc. opened in Connecticut in 1969 and oversees additional offices in California, Illinois, New Jersey, and Michigan.
