Tuition hikes recommended at state universities, colleges

The president of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system is recommending tuition increases ranging from 3.5 to 5 percent for the 2016-2017 school year for the 17 schools in the CSCU system.

Mark Ojakian, CSCU president, said he’s not balancing the system’s budget “on the backs” of the students. He said making students responsible entirely for the operating costs would necessitate a 7 percent increase at the universities and almost 11 percent at the community colleges.

The system includes four state universities, 12 community colleges and Charter Oak State College.

“While this increase does not close our projected deficit, I believe it is fair given our current fiscal environment,” Ojakian said. “It allows our schools to remain accessible and not burden students with crippling debt upon graduation.”

The proposed annual increases are:

  • CSCU - 5 percent, or $480, to $10,089;
  • Community Colleges - 3.5 percent, or $141, to $4,032; and,
  • Charter Oak State College - 4 percent, or $347, to $8,666.

The Board of Regents Finance Committee will meet on Monday, March 28 to discuss the recommended tuition increase. The entire regents board will then vote on the proposal the following day.

Earlier this week, Ojakian initiated a hiring freeze at CSCU.
