Two similarly sized physician groups comprising more than 250 doctors said Monday that they intend to merge.

Grove Hill Medical Centers and Connecticut Multispecialty Group said the merger would result in the largest physician-owned medical practice in central Connecticut. The two said they have signed a memorandum of understanding, but will continue operations as normal over the next year while they work through the merger.

Between them, Grove Hill and Connecticut Multispecialty have 26 locations in Greater Hartford, according to their websites.

Terms of the potential deal were not disclosed.

Doctors have increasingly affiliated or consolidated their practices in Connecticut, facing uncertainty over reimbursement rates, federal requirements for electronic medical records and the advent of accountable-care models.

Other major physician groups in Connecticut include Hartford Healthcare Medical Group, Northeast Medical Group, Yale Medical Group, ProHealth Physicians, and Women's Health USA.
