Two mayors fresh off defeats push for more federal funds

In putting forth the agenda, the conference released information from IHS Global Insight, that says cities and their metro areas are drivers of the national economy. They account for over 90 percent of the GDP and wage income, and 87 percent of jobs nationally. In the near future, the HIS Global Insight report adds, 92 percent of U.S. economic growth will be generated in cities and metro areas.

"Mayors cannot and have not waited for Washington to act," said USCM Vice President Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett, said in a statement. "But strengthening the federal-city partnership is critical because, while we have taken the lead, we are clear that we cannot solve our nation's biggest challenges alone."

Among the challenges are the jobs that were regained during the recovery have lower wages than those lost during the recession, and those going back to work had lost over $93 billion in wages by mid 2014.

U.S. Conference of Mayors President Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake addressed the National Press Club today. She said since more than 80 percent of the people in this country live in cities and their metropolitan areas, mayors believe the presidential aspirants should prioritize issues that matter most to people who live in urban areas.
