The University of Connecticut Board of Trustees Wednesday unanimously approved two new undergraduate majors within the College of Agriculture, Health and National Resources.

The approved majors, which will be available in the fall of 2022, are economics of sustainable development and management and environmental and natural resource economics.

Students must complete 36 credits in the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources toward the majors. They include at least 12 credits from core classes, and six or more from elective classes in the areas of study.

The bachelor’s degree in economics of sustainable development and management prepares students to use economic analysis and quantitative methods to understand and evaluate problems faced by individuals, firms, and public agencies. The curriculum incorporates business management, marketing and finance, consumer behavior, sustainable development, and international trade, among others.

The environmental and natural resource economics degree will prepare students to use economic analysis and quantitative methods to understand and evaluate complex interactions between economic markets, societal values and government policies. The curriculum incorporates economics into the study of pollution by air, water and land; waste disposal and recycling; business and consumer behavior; climate change and adaptation; and environmental justice, among others.
