UConn's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology was awarded a $56,520 scientific research grant by the Richard P. Garmany Fund at The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The funds will allow Greater Hartford schoolchildren to study the legendary White Witch moth.
The grant will support three years of research, fieldwork and educational programming under the direction of David Wagner, a UConn professor who has written four books and more than 70 scientific papers on Lepidoptera, the study of butterflies and moths, and their caterpillars.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation gave $477,500 in grants to Connecticut nonprofits, including 27 in Greater Hartford, to help connect the unemployed, underemployed, veterans, youth and those with disabilities to training and employment opportunities. Last year, Bank of America invested more than $200 million globally to help address pressing issues, as part of a 10-year goal to invest $2 billion in nonprofit organizations engaged in improving the health and vitality of communities.

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving granted a total of $319,845 to seven of the region's school districts including Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Manchester, Vernon, Windsor, and Windsor Locks to promote increased educational equity and opportunity and bring a variety of vital new student and family services and supports to schools. The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving works to build vibrant communities within Greater Hartford.

Webster Bank has awarded $7,500 to Achieve Hartford! to support parent engagement around education excellence in Hartford and the Community Spelling Bee.
Achieve Hartford! was founded by the business community to build a culture of education excellence among families, communities, and schools in Connecticut's Capital City.

S&S Worldwide has donated $6,000 to Colchester's Parks and Recreation for various community programs including: $500 for Family Games Night; $350 for a park race; $350 for a ghost run; and $1,800 for 57 Fest and the concert on the green program.
The remaining $3,000 will be used for yearly camp scholarships that allow families requesting financial assistance to attend Colchester's award-winning summer programs.

All 12 of Panera Bread's Greater Hartford bakery-cafes recently donated $7,201.23 to Foodshare, the Bloomfield-based nonprofit food bank.
The donation was collected as part of the cafes' ongoing Panera Cares Community Breadbox Program, which gives customers the opportunity to provide cash donations at the register with half designated to help fund Panera soup procurement for Foodshare and the other half donated as cash to support the food bank's efforts to provide quality, nutritious food to Greater Hartford residents in need.
The 12 participating Panera Bread bakery-cafes are owned and operated by Panera Bread franchisee, Howley Bread Group LTD.
