If you needed additional evidence of the expanding reach of name, image and likeness (NIL) in college athletics, look no further than Rentschler Field in East Hartford.
The University of Connecticut said this week it has signed a one-year deal with Storrs Central, the for-profit unit of its NIL collective Bleeding Blue for Good. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but the deal includes featuring the Storrs Central logo on the field at Pratt & Whitney Stadium this fall.
UConn is the first NCAA school in the nation to feature an NIL-related logo on its home football field. NIL entities have previously been featured only on videoboards in stadiums across the country.
The Storrs Central logo will be placed at the 25 yard line on each side of the field, bracketing the Husky mascot logo at the 50 yard line.
“In the era of NIL, it’s never been more important to proactively promote unique opportunities for our student-athletes,” UConn Athletic Director David Benedict said in a statement. “Bleeding Blue for Good and Storrs Central have been great partners as we navigate the continually changing landscape of college athletics.”
Storrs Central raises money for UConn athletes in part by offering a subscription website and mobile app that provides exclusive content and insider access to UConn athletes.
The UConn football team opens its 2024 season on Aug. 31 at noon with a road game against the University of Maryland. The Huskies play their first home game on Sept. 7 at noon vs. Merrimack College.
