The University of Connecticut recently secured the No. 1 spot in USA Today’s rankings of the best colleges for sports fans.

The publication asked its readers to vote for the “absolute best college experiences for sports fans,” and announced the top 10 list on Friday.

In announcing the poll results, USA Today noted how UConn’s women's basketball team “has been one of the most successful teams in the nation,” and pointed out its accomplishments -  like 11 national championships and a record-breaking 111-game winning streak. The publication also spotlighted the success of the UConn men’s basketball team and its two tournament titles in the last decade.

“We’re very happy that the UConn community is being recognized in this way, and of course, we agree that Storrs is an exciting, one-of-a-kind atmosphere for college sports,” said UConn spokeswoman Stephanie Reitz, via email Tuesday.

“As we’ve also seen as recently as last weekend, that same vibrancy is present at East Hartford’s Rentschler Field on football game days, and in downtown Hartford when our teams play at the XL Center,” Reitz added. “Our students, alumni, and other supporters exude that Husky spirit throughout Connecticut, and wherever they travel to root on our athletes.”

UConn was the only Connecticut-based college or university to make the top 10 list.

The others, from No. 2 through No. 10, included: Florida State University, University of Alabama, University of Florida, Indiana University, Louisiana State University, University of Wisconsin - Madison, Pennsylvania State University, University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame.

UConn also garnered recognition in late August, when The Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities named UConn as an “Innovation and Economic Prosperity University,” citing factors such as its research, public and private partnerships, invention and discovery, effectiveness in creating jobs, and impact on economic and community development.
