A dispute over reimbursement rates remains unresolved as Farmington health insurer ConnectiCare’s contract with UConn Health expired this week.
The contract between the health system and health insurer expired at midnight on April 15.
Patients insured by Farmington-based ConnectiCare, which is now owned by California-based Molina Healthcare Inc., will remain in network for 60 days past the contract expiration date under a state-mandated grace period.
This is the latest in an increasing number of disputes between healthcare providers and payers.
On its website, UConn health states that it has been working with ConnectiCare for several months “to secure a fair contract that adequately covers the true cost of delivering high-quality care.”
It adds that ConnectiCare reimburses UConn Health at a rate that is among the lowest when compared to other health systems in the state.
Dr. Andrew Agwunobi, CEO of UConn Health, said his organization’s top priority is protecting access to his facility’s care.
“We are committed to negotiating in good faith and reaching an agreement that reflects fair reimbursement for the real cost and value of that exceptional care at UConn Health,” said Agwunobi, who has been working to put his health system on a stronger financial footing.

He added that UConn Health continues to negotiate with ConnectiCare.
A spokesperson for ConnectiCare did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Because of the state-mandated grace period, patients covered by ConnectiCare may continue to see their UConn Health physicians and receive services at UConn John Dempsey Hospital.
The grace period will end on June 14 if a new contract is not reached before then.
