UConn’s Connecticut Transportation Institute announced that it will collaborate with a national Engineering Workforce Consortium to address workforce shortages and boost recruitment and retention efforts.
The consortium was formed following a recent workforce summit hosted by the American Council of Engineering Companies, the American Public Works Association, and the American Society of Civil Engineers, which collectively recognize “the urgent need to tackle workforce challenges
in the industry,” university officials said.
The consortium has over a dozen members that have identified three major core objectives:
Attract the next generation of engineering talent
Retain the existing workforce in engineering and public works
Advocate for industry growth and sustainability
Connecticut has already been grappling with its own engineering shortage, and the state has set a goal to increase manufacturing and engineering jobs by 4% annually over the next 10 years, as the number of engineering job vacancies in the state continues to climb.
The Connecticut Transportation Institute at UConn works to support engineering and public works workforce development efforts through programs including an engineering recruiting taskforce partnership with the Connecticut Department of Transportation as well as 10 professional development programs supporting all levels of state and municipal transportation professionals.
American Public Works Association President Dominick Longobardi said many public works departments have unfilled job openings, which is delaying projects.
Organizations participating in the consortium include:
ACE Mentor
American Council of Engineering Companies
American Public Works Association
American Society of Civil Engineers
Army Corps of Engineers
Connecticut Transportation Institute—University of Connecticut
DiscoverE
ElevateHER
Engineers Without Borders USA
Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Institute of Transportation Engineers
National Academy of Construction
National Society of Professional Engineers
Society of American Military Engineers
Society of Women Engineers
