UConn has additional plans to invest in its Hartford campus, including a new dining option for students.

The state’s flagship university is planning to build a new café within its downtown Hartford campus building to provide students an affordable dining option on-site.

The build out within UConn’s Hartford Times building would cost $1.1 million, in addition to $200,000 that has been approved for project planning.

The café, which will be open to the public, will be discussed Tuesday during a meeting of the UConn Board of Trustees’ buildings, grounds and environment committee. The $1.1 million in university funds still need to be approved by the Board of Trustees, which is expected to take up the request during its December meeting, public documents show.

According to a brief project outline, the café will be constructed on the first floor of the Hartford Times building and designed to feature a hot and cold food display, point-of-sale station, beverage station, and a selection of pre-made soups, salads and sandwiches.

It will also include built-in seating, flexible loose seating, tables, chairs and necessary equipment for the service area. Students will be able to use a university dining plan to purchase food from the café, which is anticipated to open in fall 2025, the school said.

UConn said it originally envisioned operating a student-centric café when it designed and opened its Hartford campus, but held off in hopes that more quick-service public cafés and takeout dining options might open adjacent to the campus.

This would be the latest investment UConn is making in Hartford. The school will also be leasing space in a downtown Hartford building that is being converted into a 200-bed residence hall for students, and recently debuted its new Community Intersections & Innovation Space near the XL Center.
