The University of Connecticut board of trustees Wednesday morning unanimously approved offering a new Master of Science program in data science that will debut next fall.

The academic affairs committee endorsed the idea and referred it to the university’s full board, which approved it..

The program is aimed at both domestic and international students who have an interest in applied data science and for working professionals looking for a career as a data scientist.

The curriculum is an interdisciplinary 30 credit hour program and the university hopes to enroll 25 students for the in-person program in the fall 2022 and to enroll 50 students in the online program in the spring of 2023.

In a description of the program to UConn’s board of trustees, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Carl Lejuez, wrote that the skills that will be taught and learned are in high demand.

The program “will combine rigorous training in fundamental principles of data science with a strong emphasis on ethics woven throughout the curriculum,” Lejuez said. “It combines the strength of faculty across five schools and colleges and will culminate with a practical, real-world required capstone project in which students work on collaborative teams to solve problems posed to them by industry, government, or non-profit partners.”

Interviews for a permanent director of the program have concluded and that individual will be named this month, the school said.
