Orange-based United Illuminating, which recently became a subsidiary of Avangrid Inc., said it installed more than 15,000 LED streetlights in the past year.
The utility company began installations last year and plans to swap out approximately 51,000 bulbs by 2020. It says the project will save millions in municipal and maintenance costs.
UI owns the streetlights in 16 of the 17 towns in its service territory.
The LED program began in Bridgeport, where installations are now nearly finished. Stratford replacements are about 85 percent done, according to the company, which expects to begin LED work in North Haven this year.
LED lights are as much as 40 percent more efficient than high-pressure sodium fixtures, UI said. They’re also more expensive.
But in New Haven, a combination of state incentive payments and interest-free financing was expected to make the project cost neutral for the first three years, with savings starting in year four, according to the New Haven Independent.
UI said savings would vary by municipality, depending on wattage and choice of generation service supplier.
