Lorenzo Boyd has been named to fill the newly created position of vice president for diversity and inclusion/chief diversity officer at the University of New Haven.
Boyd previously was UNH’s assistant provost for diversity and inclusion and director of its Center for Advanced Policing.
UNH President Steven H. Kaplan announced the creation of the new post several weeks ago as part of a series of institutional initiatives in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd and the nationwide examination of police brutality and racial injustice.
Boyd will serve as an adviser to Kaplan and serve on the president’s cabinet as well as the university’s Leadership Council. He is expected to play a key role in developing and leading the implementation of a diversity, equity and inclusion strategic plan for the West Haven school.
Before coming to UNH Boyd was associate professor and chair of the departments of criminal justice and social sciences at the University of Maryland/Eastern Shore. Before that he was master’s program coordinator for the University of Massachusetts/Lowell’s School of Criminology & Justice Studies.
He received a Ph.D. in sociology from Northeastern University, an MA in applied sociology from the University of Massachusetts/Boston, and a BA (sociology) from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst.
