The University of Bridgeport reported a significant jump in enrollment for the fall semester, its first increase in five years.
The university enrolled 1,322 new students, a 30% increase compared to enrollment of first-time students last fall, according to an announcement.
Danielle Wilken, university president, credited the increase to UB’s faculty, learning opportunities and commitment to diversity and inclusion.
The rise in enrollment includes 133 new student athletes.
University officials attributed the student-athlete interest in part to its addition of five new varsity sports, which include NCAA Division II men's lacrosse, and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field.
Jay Moran, UB’s vice president of athletics and recreation, said the additions give student athletes more opportunities to play a sport in college.
“We now have some of the biggest roster sizes we’'ve ever had,” Moran said.
Over 600 of the new students are international students, who hail from 22 countries.
The university’s International Admissions Office has a partnership with Enrollment Advisory Group, a global firm that specializes in international recruitment.
Many international students are coming to UB because of its College of Engineering program, according to the university.
Programs such as MS in artificial intelligence, MS in analytics and systems, MS in computer science, Ph.D. in computer science and engineering, and Ph.D. in technology management have seen significant growth, according to Khaled Elleithy, a professor and the dean of the College of Engineering, Business, and Education.
The university reports that applications for Spring 2023 are up by over 7,000 compared with last year, a 164% jump which UB attributed to strong international student demand.
