The University of New Haven announced this week that it’s collaborating with a national education company to offer cannabis certificate programs.

West Haven’s UNH and Green Flower, a California-based cannabis education company, are launching four marijuana certificate programs this year beginning Sept. 5. The programs will focus on: business; health care and medicine; law and policy; and agriculture and horticulture. Each certificate program consists of three, eight-week online courses.

“We want to offer programs that are really relevant to what’s going on in the world and could help learners of all kinds,” said UNH Dean of College Arts and Sciences and Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Initiatives Shaily Menon.

Menon, who just finished up her first year at UNH, said she worked on a similar cannabis certificate program with Green Flower when she was working at her previous school, St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. It was successful there, she said, so she reached out to the company to launch a similar program at UNH.

UNH is the first college or university in the state to collaborate with Green Flower, but several other schools like the University of Connecticut have cannabis-related programs.

Menon said the certificates are open to anyone, including younger students or adults hoping to add to their education, regardless of their skill sets. Entrepreneurs, healthcare providers, legal professionals and growers could all benefit from the program, which includes networking opportunities with potential employers in the cannabis industry.

“Let's say they’re a healthcare provider and they just want to be better educated — it could be professional development to them even if they never get into the business,” Menon said.

Menon said as more states continue to legalize recreational use of the plant, it’s important for people to be educated about it. That goes for attorneys and lawyers, doctors, and those who want to participate in the legal cannabis industry as business owners.

“It’s an emerging field, and as an educator I feel knowledge is key to making good decisions,” Menon said.

Green Flower helps select and vet faculty members, and the courses are developed by board-certified doctors and lawyers along with experts in engineering and agriculture, according to information from Green Flower.

Each course program costs $2,950 and enrollment is now open. Those who sign up for multiple programs will save 33% on each additional program they select. More information about the program can be found here.
