The University of New Haven has purchased a West Haven commercial property for more than $4 million, and is still evaluating the best use of the space.
A CVS pharmacy building currently sits on the property at 252 Orange St., in the Allingtown section of West Haven. It was sold, along with a half-acre adjacent vacant parcel at 1237 Campbell Ave., by WHCV Realty LLC and Charterhouse Development Corp. of Wellesley, Mass., to the University of New Haven for $4.3 million in a deal recorded May 13, according to city land records.
The 10,000-square-foot store was built in 2000. WHCV bought the 252 Orange St., property for $1.9 million in November 2021.
The university is in the process of determining the most appropriate use for the property moving forward, school officials said.
“This property is adjacent to University Commons, a private-mixed used development, featuring student housing and commercial space that has helped transform the area around campus in the Allingtown section of West Haven,” the university said in a statement. “The property purchased is an ideal location to continue to enhance this area, providing new opportunities for our University community.”
The site is less than half-a-mile from the school, which has more than 9,800 students enrolled.
Also adjacent to this parcel is The Atwood, a 90,000-square-foot new construction, mixed-use retail and residential project with first-floor retail and 68 apartment units.
Additional surrounding lots include Park View, a 61,000-square-foot mixed-use retail/residential building completed in July 2020 with 43 apartments; the Forest, which was completed fall 2021 and includes 15,000 square feet of retail space and residential units; and the Chester, a 21,000-square-foot former library that has been renovated and updated as medical, commercial and office space that began leasing in 2021.
