Students interested in pursuing a career in sports management have a new option.
The University of Hartford’s Barney School of Business has launched a new sports management program that includes an undergraduate major, minor, and post-baccalaureate certificate.
Carmen Cotei, interim dean of Barney and a finance professor, said the new program addresses all the functions of a standard management degree, but with a sports focus.
Students have the “flexibility of tailoring one’s program through a variety of elective courses, such as sports journalism, sports broadcasting, sports nutrition and exercise science,” Cotei said.
The program aims to prepare students for careers in sports marketing, athletics administration, sales, event operations, facility management, community relations, social media and more, according to the university. Students will learn managerial skills and study topics such as sports economic trends and legal, financial and marketing issues specific to the sports industry.
The Barney School of Business has partnerships with area sports organizations, such as Bristol-based ESPN and the Hartford Yard Goats, and will leverage those for students’ benefit.
“Our established relationships with sports organizations in our region will facilitate project-based learning and internships,” Cotei said.
According to the West Hartford-based university, the sports management field is on a growth trajectory, with a projected 11% increase in jobs between 2018 and 2028.
