The University of New Haven will begin a nationwide search this summer for a new president to replace Steven H. Kaplan, who is retiring at the end of June.

Kaplan, who served as president for 18 years, announced his plans to retire last summer and then transitioned to the role of chancellor in recent months.

Since last year, Sheahon Zenger has been serving as the university’s interim president.

Kaplan will become president emeritus as of July 1 and will assist Zenger if needed.

The president search committee is made up of members of the university’s Board of Governors, students, faculty, alumni and administrators.

Michael Ambrose, a longtime Sikorsky executive who is also a 1984 UNH graduate and board vice chair, is serving as chair of the search committee.

"This is an exciting time for the university as we look to advance the incredible momentum established by Dr. Kaplan during his distinguished nearly 20-year tenure," Ambrose said, in a letter to the UNH community.

This summer, the West Haven-based university will name a consulting executive search firm that will support the committee, according to Ambrose.

A position description will be posted by this fall, and the search committee will review applications as they come in. The projected timeline is for interviews to be conducted this winter, with a candidate selected by early spring 2024. The university aims to have the chosen candidate start officially on July 1, 2024.
