The University of St. Joseph will offer a new concentration in esports management next fall in response to the growing popularity and business impact of competitive gaming.
The new concentration, part of the university’s sports management and promotion bachelor’s degree, will prepare students to enter the business side of the esports industry.
“There is a diverse range of career opportunities in the esports field, including game development, event management, and marketing,” said Janet Howes, USJ assistant professor of business administration and director of the Sport Management and Promotion Program.
According to the university, the concentration will combine the fundamentals of sports management with the digital world of esports, and students will gain skills to work on the business side of the esports gaming industry and to understand the competitive business landscape and cultural impact needed to succeed within the emerging field.
Esports have become big business, with Marketing Hub predicting the industry will generate $72 billion in revenue by 2027.
“Esports has grown from a casual hobby to an organized professional sport with a tremendous increase in employment opportunities,” said USJ President Rhona Free. “This new program will graduate students ready to manage esports tournaments and teams, promote events, and engage with trade groups and regulatory bodies.”
All USJ students are eligible to earn nine credits through three esports courses – introduction to esports management, contemporary issues in esports, and esports funding and revenue generation – but only students majoring in the Sport Management and Promotion are eligible to earn the official concentration in esports management, the school said.
Potential professions within the esports gaming industry include broadcasting, esports coach, esports event manager, esports marketer, professional esports athlete and social media influencers.
