Co-working space Upward Hartford on Tuesday named eight startups hailing from the U.S. and four other countries to its inaugural smart building and aged care pilot programs.

Upward Labs, backed by a two-year, $3.9 million investment from the state’s quasi-public venture arm, Connecticut Innovations (CI), said it spent the last six months combing through startup applicants, and selected several focused on artificial intelligence (AI), and software and internet-of-things (IoT) platforms.

The programs, based at Upward Hartford in downtown’s Stilts Building on Church Street, has already set aside living quarters for participating entrepreneurs at a 32-bedroom apartment complex at 196 Trumbull St. known as Upward Living. The four-story, 40,000-square-foot “co-living” space opening in July will also house entrepreneurs from downtown’s Stanley+Techstars Additive Manufacturing Accelerator in Constitution Plaza.

Upward Labs startups will pilot their technologies over six months under the guidance of 27 corporate partners including Aetna, Cigna, Nassau Re, CareCentrix and Carrier. The program aims to invest in 40 companies over two years.

The participating startups, according to Upward Labs, include the following:

  • Xandar Kardian (South Korea): A technology with several uses in both aged care and smart buildings focused on the home-remote health monitoring and personal emergency response systems (PERS) markets.
  • Nouslogic (California): A wireless hardware/software IoT platform with sensors that aggregate data to manage events and access to both residential and commercial property owners.
  • Cloudastructure (California): Provides AI driven, cloud-based video surveillance and access control for enterprise security systems.
  • Nonnatech (New York): Provides digital health technology for home health care organizations and senior living communities.
  • BEAD Technology (Germany): An AI-based system that analyzes and optimizes a building’s energy, marketing strategies and measures real-time occupancy data.
  • AJI Digital (France): Provides a digital publication platform for interactive walls through its “all-in-one” hardware and software.
  • Algorithmic Intuition (California): Provides algorithmic software for sensors in wellness monitoring devices.
  • WizeCare (Israel): A mobile and desktop platform that connects patients and clinicians to physical therapy services.

Upward Hartford earlier this month on Twitter said startups began meeting with local corporate partners ahead of the program’s launch on Wednesday, May 1.
