The Urban League of Greater Hartford announced that it has received its largest grant since it was founded in 1964: a two-year, $600,000 flexible funding grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.
The grant will “support the organization’s growth and impact,” the nonprofit said.
“As we celebrate the 60th year of the Urban League in Hartford, this grant will ensure we not only continue but continue to become a stronger and more impactful empowerment agency for the region,” Urban League CEO David Hopkins said.
Over the past five years, Hopkins has helped stabilize the Urban League’s finances, staffing and infrastructure through strategic partnerships with health systems, financial institutions, industrial firms and government entities, the announcement states.
The Urban League is based in Hartford’s Asylum Hill neighborhood and provides programming and services to about 3,000 people, aimed at helping them to overcome institutional and systemic inequities in education, employment, housing, health and social justice.
The Urban League runs programs including Project Ready, which provides high school students with academic support and career readiness training, and Project STABLE, which integrates workforce training, licensing and certifications with financial literacy for ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) individuals.
The organization also has housing and health equity partnerships.
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving works closely with the Urban League and supports many of its initiatives.
“The Urban League's dedication to addressing systemic inequities and empowering marginalized communities aligns perfectly with our mission to promote social and economic mobility, ensuring that more individuals and families in Greater Hartford have access to the resources they need to thrive,” said Joel Hicks-Rivera, the foundation’s senior community impact officer.
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has awarded grants of more than $998 million since its founding in 1925.
