A company affiliated with the U.S.’ largest health insurer, UnitedHealth Group, is looking to take a majority ownership stake in a Guilford surgical center.
The physician-owned Guilford Surgery Center, at 246 Goose Lane, in 2022 sold a 49% non-controlling interest to Surgical Care Affiliates, which is owned by UnitedHealth’s Optum division.
Now, the surgery center is asking state regulators permission to sell an additional 9% stake to Surgical Care Affiliates and UnitedHealth, which would give the buyers a 58% controlling interest in the company.
Currently, 23 physicians own an interest in the Guilford Surgery Center, according to an application submitted to the Office of Health Strategy, a regulator that approves many healthcare industry mergers and sales.
Surgical Care Affiliates has been providing day-to-day management services at Guilford Surgery Center since November 2022, the application said.
The Guilford Surgery Center is a multi-specialty provider that offers ambulatory services in various surgical specialties, including ophthalmology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pain management, plastic surgery and urology. Its primary service area includes a number of cities/towns in and around Guilford.
Surgical Care Affiliates has been growing its presence in Connecticut and elsewhere in recent years. It owns, operates and/or manages more than 260 surgical facilities nationwide, including 10 in Connecticut.
Surgical Care Affiliates said its majority acquisition “will improve health equity and the quality, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness of outpatient surgical care in the area,” according to the application.
It also said it has no plans to reduce or terminate any of the surgical subspecialties offered at the Guilford Surgery Center.
