U.S. taps Pratt to pen fuel-efficient warplane motor
East Hartford’s Pratt & Whitney Co. won an Air Force contract to design the next generation of powerful yet highly fuel-efficient jet engines for warplanes.
The Air Force Research Laboratory awarded Pratt a contract for an unspecified sum, Pratt said Tuesday.
Pratt said that applying the best features from its previous F119 and F135 fighter engines its goal is to cut fuel burn by up to 25 percent more than those fuel-efficient engines.
The Air Force has given Pratt a timetable of late 2015 to demonstrate an advanced high operating pressure ratio engine core, followed by full engine testing in 2016.
"We're confident that our technical approach will ultimately give future combat aircraft added range and payload capabilities, while reducing the cost burden of expensive jet fuel," said Pratt Military Engines President Bennett Croswell.
Pratt is a division of Hartford’s United Technologies Corp.
