United Illuminating, a subsidiary of the Orange-based Avangrid Inc., is cautioning customers that it could take “several days” to fully restore service following Tuesday’s Tropical Storm Isaias.

The utility serves 17 towns and cities throughout the New Haven region.

As of 8 p.m. Tuesday night, approximately 116,000 of its customers were without power, UI reported. By noon on Wednesday, this figure had dropped to about 104,000.

The company’s priority is to restore critical facilities such as hospitals and evacuation centers, then to fix transmission lines, substations, circuits and issues impacting large groups of customers. Finally, they will turn their attention to smaller groups of customers, including individual homes and businesses.

Tony Marone, UI’s president and CEO, said the company brought in internal and contract resources to begin clearing roads and restoring power.

“We are aware that this event is particularly challenging for our customers who are working from home, or caring for children or the elderly,” Marone said.

Gov. Ned Lamont announced Wednesday that he has proclaimed a state of emergency in response to the widespread power outages in the state, as some 700,000 customers statewide are experiencing outages.

“I remain in consistent communication with municipal leaders and utility officials so that we can move resources to where they are most needed at this time,” Lamont said.
