A Vermont-based company that makes reels is looking to rezone 17.5 acres in Enfield to accommodate future growth in the town.
Carris Reels, which formerly operated locally as Bridge Manufacturing, is an employee-owned company that makes wooden, plastic and metal reels used by the wire and cable industry. The company is seeking permission from the Enfield Planning and Zoning commission to rezone four properties (14 & 20 Park St., and 47 and 51 Oak St.) from residential to industrial use.
The rezoning’s goal is to lay the groundwork for Carris Reels to construct a new facility in town that provides more energy-efficient, state-of-the-art production capacity, according to a project application.
The company, which has operations across the U.S. and Canada, has been in its existing Enfield facility, at 11 Randolph St., for over 100 years, according to the project application.
“Carris very much wants to stay in Enfield given their long history in the community and has gradually secured land adjacent to its existing facility in order to expand,” the application states. “Should the proposed zone change be approved, it will allow Carris to pursue design, permitting,
and development of a new facility here in Enfield.”
No physical development project is being proposed at this time. That will come in a future project application, the company said, adding that it would like to design the new building in 2025, and apply for site permits by the end of the year.
All four parcels are located northeast of the intersection of Park and Oak streets — 14 and 20 Park St. are currently used as farmland for the cultivation of tobacco; 47 and
51 Oak St. are both residential properties, according to the application.
Property records show Carris Reels-controlled limited liability companies own 14 and 20 Park St., and 47 Oak St., while 51 Oak St., which is home to a single-family house, is owned by Deanna & Andrew LLC, which is controlled by Deanna Lewis of East Granby, property records show.
A public hearing about the zoning change will be held Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m., in Enfield council chambers.
