Longtime banker Mary E. Noons will be taking over as president and chief operating officer of Washington Trust Bancorp Inc. and its subsidiary, The Washington Trust Company, in April.
Noons will be the first woman to serve in this position in the bank’s nearly 223-year history, bank officials said. She will start her new role on April 26, following an annual shareholders meeting. Washington Trust Bancorp Inc. is the parent of The Washington Trust Company.
Noons will replace Mark K.W. Gim, who is retiring from the Rhode Island-based bank, which was originally founded in August of 1800.
Washington Trust recently expanded its Connecticut presence by opening a commercial lending office at 265 Church St., Suite 1010, in New Haven. The office is adjacent to the existing Washington Trust Wealth Management office, which is in Suite 1006. The new office included additional staff, who are working with commercial clients throughout Connecticut.
Noons has had several leadership roles with the company, and most recently has been serving as senior executive vice president, retail lending.
Edward O. “Ned” Handy III, Washington Trust board chairman and chief executive officer, credited Noons with playing a key role in the bank’s “record mortgage origination, revenue growth and regional expansion.”
Noons, a Rhode Island resident, has more than 25 years of experience in professional mortgage and consumer origination, operations, and leadership development. During her tenure at Washington Trust, she has assisted with the expansion of its mortgage operations from Rhode Island into greater New England.
“Mary is a proven leader and a strategic thinker with a passion for service excellence, process improvement, operational efficiency and enhancing the customer experience,” Handy said.
Handy credited Gim with overseeing the growth and regional expansion of Washington Trust’s retail, wealth management and mortgage divisions during his tenure.
