Wesleyan University in Middletown has joined the edX network and plans to launch a new series of online courses, the university announced last week.
Wesleyan is the latest major university to join the network, which hosts a range of offerings known as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on its website.
Wesleyan President Michael S. Roth said, “Our partnership with edX gives us the ability to grow our online offerings, bringing creative and diverse programming to more than 46 million learners around the globe.”
Wesleyan faculty members currently offer online courses through the Coursera platform on subjects including creative writing, the humanities, film and mathematics.
Founded by Harvard and MIT in 2012, edX offers free and open courses, professional certificates, boot camps, credit-bearing micro credentials and undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
Educational technology 2U purchased the edX platform in 2021; the company trades on the Nasdaq as TWOU. The combined company partners with 230 institutions, including 19 of the top 20 ranked universities in the world, according to a statement at the time of the merger.
