Wheeler Clinic says it recently won three federal grants worth over $4.3 million to support several healthcare initiatives at their locations in Hartford, New Britain and Plainville.
The Hartford location received a $2.5 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to support infants and children up to 12 who have experienced trauma or are at risk for a mental illness diagnosis. SAMHSA is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The grant is also geared for infants diagnosed with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), a cluster of conditions caused when an infant withdraws from certain drugs they were exposed to prior to birth. Those affected are more prone to seizures, respiratory complications and low birth weight vs. infants without NAS.
Distributed over five years, the funding provides workforce training, outreach, screening and other services. The SAMHSA grant was awarded to 10 organizations nationally.
Wheeler, at 75 North Mountain Road in New Britain, received a $1.5 million grant to expand and improve access to medication-assisted treatment and recovery services for adults in the city with opioid addictions.
SAMHSA will award Wheeler the grant over three years to provide local adults with care coordination, outreach and peer recovery services on North Mountain Road.
Wheeler, which has several Plainville locations, but primarily at 91 Northwest Dr., also received a three-year, $375,000 grant from SAMHSA to support mental health first aid training.
Working with several organizations, including the Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council and the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system, Wheeler will offer eight-hour training courses to over 1,700 police, fire, first responders and college campus security to improve their mental health literacy.
Wheeler received over $39.5 million in contributions and grants in 2017, with total revenues of more than $72.7 million, according to its nonprofit tax filing.
