Windsor couple eyes first Windsor Locks brewery

A Windsor couple is looking to turn their passion for brewing into Windsor Locks’ first brewpub.

Jennifer and James Wright, a former brewer at Bloomfield’s Back East Brewing Co., are asking the town’s Planning and Zoning Commision for a special permit to operate a brewery in the Dexter Plaza at 20 Main St. The zoning commission will consider the application at a Nov. 13 public hearing.

Under an application filed last week, the Wrights are proposing to renovate the 2,560-square-foot space with new lighting, bench seating for 40, and install floor drains, piping, brewing kettles and more. Future upgrades include expanding to 80 seats with additional tables and bar stools.

Billed as Luppoleto Brewing Company, the site will include at least 26.6 parking spaces required under zoning regulations to meet its eventual 80-seat capacity.

Luppoleto is projected to produce about 122 barrels in year one, while additional fermentation and service capacity can be added for up to 700 barrels and eight draft lines, the applications says. The Main Street site will be its exclusive outlet for sales.

The brewery will not sell food and feature local food trucks during warmer months. Live acoustic music or comedy entertainment will also be provided.

The application says the brewery may consider housing yoga classes periodically and ticketed catered beer dinners for private events.

The Wrights will oversee renovations, daily operations and James will serve as head brewer. They will hire an assistant brewer and up to two other employees, plans show.

Depending on town and state authorization, the Wrights are aiming to open in spring 2019.

The couple began plotting the brewery several years ago when it encouraged the town’s zoning commission to allow brewpubs to sell pints without food.
