A Massachusetts-based women’s health technology company is closing its Danbury facility and will lay off 71 employees effective Dec. 20, according to a filing with the state Department of Labor.

Hologic Inc. announced in 2022 that it would close its location at 36-37 Apple Ridge Road, which manufactures breast health equipment products, by 2025. Its lease for the property expires in 2026.

The Danbury plant’s operations will be moved to Hologic’s facility in Newark, Delaware, the company said.

Most employees in Danbury were offered jobs at other locations, according to the company’s 2023 annual report.

After Dec. 20, a “small number” of employees will remain on-site to conduct “post-closure activities,” according to the filing. Three will be laid off on Jan. 31, 2025, and 12 will be laid off on Feb. 14, 2025.

Total severance and benefits charges, including expenses related to retention, will be roughly $5.9 million, the annual report states.

Hologic also terminated employees across all divisions and departments, and closed manufacturing facilities for minor product lines, in 2021.

Hologic is headquartered in Marlborough, Massachusetts and has other U.S. locations in New Hampshire and San Diego, along with overseas facilities in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Costa Rica, China, Spain, Germany and Finland.

The publicly traded company generated a profit of $456 million in the 2023 fiscal year, down from $1.3 billion in 2022 and $1.9 billion in 2021, according to its annual report.

As of Sept. 30, 2023, Hologic had 6,990 full-time employees, with roughly 4,000 based in the U.S.
