Yale New Haven Health restructuring, consolidating its ‘leadership team’

Amid its ongoing financial struggles and the burden of extricating itself from the failed deal to acquire Prospect Medical Holdings’ three Connecticut hospitals, Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) said Friday it is restructuring its operations, including eliminating an unknown number of positions.

In an emailed response to questions from Hartford Business Journal, a spokesperson confirmed that the health system is “redesigning its operating model,” including the organizational structures for its “inpatient care and ambulatory operations.”

“These changes will impact management and administration, as we redefine and consolidate our leadership team to streamline decision-making and drive growth across the health system,” Dana Marnane, director of public relations and communications for YNHHS, said in the email.

Marnane added that, “Most impacted individuals will have opportunities within the new structure, though their roles may change, and we hope that they will remain with our system.”

She did not provide any details on the number of employees or which specific members of the “leadership team” will be affected.

Marnane did add that YNHHS is “embracing a structure that has already been adopted by many of our peer institutions,” and added that the redesign “will allow us to maintain a consistent care signature for the patients we serve today, while growing to serve more patients across our region.”

Yale New Haven Health System — which includes Bridgeport Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and Yale-New Haven Hospital and related entities — reported an operating loss of $142 million in fiscal year 2023, the latest data available from the state Office of Health Strategy. That was an improvement from the previous fiscal year, when YNHHS reported an operating loss of $234 million.

YNHHS also said in February that, after years of negotiations, its proposed $435 million deal to acquire Waterbury, Manchester Memorial and Rockville General hospitals from California-based Prospect Medical Holdings appears to be “impossible.”

Prospect, which owns hospitals in four states, filed for federal bankruptcy protection in January.
