The YMCA of Greater Hartford, headquartered in downtown Hartford, has placed 952 of its part-time employees on furlough as nearly all its locations have closed across the region because of the COVID-19 outbreak, according to a state labor filing.
Based at 50 State House Square, YMCA on Friday informed the state Department of Labor (DOL) that it expects the furloughs to be temporary, and does not anticipate they will last longer than six months.
YMCA closed all but two of its locations -- two of its preschools remain open in East Hartford and Plainville -- following Gov. Ned Lamont’s executive order on March 16 mandating the closure of gyms, movie theaters and other venues that included YMCA’s operations, a spokeswoman told HBJ Tuesday afternoon.
Furloughed staffers were paid for the last two weeks of previously anticipated work, she said.
Each YMCA facility experienced less than 50 employment losses. YMCA, which has locations in Hartford, West Hartford, Plainville and Glastonbury, will continue operating despite certain individual sites being temporarily closed.
Roughly 200 full-time YMCA employees were not impacted by this round of furloughs.
“We are keeping as many staff employed as we can right now,” the YMCA spokeswoman said.
