YNHH: Unvaccinated employees facing termination drops to 94

The number of Yale New Haven Health system employees who face termination for failing to comply with a COVID-19 vaccine mandate was at 94 Monday, according to a system spokesperson.

System leadership had indicated previously that employees would be terminated on Oct. 18 if they weren’t vaccinated.

Mark D’Antonio, a spokesman for the health system, said Monday the numbers “remain fluid,” as the system tracks where each employee is in the process of receiving first and second doses. 

“We continue to work with our employees to provide convenient options for vaccination, as well as education to assist with their decision-making,” D’Antonio said, via an emailed statement. 

He indicated that a number of employees will become eligible to receive their second dose in the coming weeks, and as long as they do so, they will not be terminated. They were not included in the latest tally of 94 facing termination.

“We are working with leaders and employees to ensure compliance with our policy in an effort to provide the safest environment for patients and staff,” D’Antonio said.

Back in July, the system indicated its approximately 29,000 employees had until Aug. 31 to get their first shot, and Sept. 30 to get fully vaccinated. 

Hundreds of staffers have been pursuing vaccination in recent weeks, and the number of unvaccinated was around 400 in late September.

System leaders have said they wanted to avoid any terminations.

Marna P. Borgstrom, CEO of Yale New Haven Health, said at the time the mandate was issued that it was “the only way to be safe as healthcare providers.”

The health system includes Yale New Haven Hospital, Bridgeport Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, Lawrence+Memorial Hospital in New London and Westerly Hospital in Rhode Island.
