Zimmer runner-up in Better Government competition

Ben Zimmer, executive director of the Connecticut Policy Institute in New Haven, was a runner-up in the annual Better Government Competition conducted by the Pioneer Institute, a Boston-based research group. This year's contest theme was “job creation.” Zimmer's entry, “Evaluating State Incentives for Business,” includes a three-part assessment system to help state economic development agencies distinguish between policies that are net contributors to the economy from those that are merely selective handouts. Zimmer will receive $1,000.

QU'S Ball named Honorary Consul of Hungary

Christopher Ball, director of the Central European Institute and Istvan Szechenyi Chair in International Economics at Quinnipiac University, was recently inaugurated as Honorary Consul of Hungary for the state of Connecticut. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Gyorgy Szapary, Hungarian Ambassador to the United States. As honorary consul, Ball will be responsible for supporting Hungarians in the United States as well as the Hungarian community in Connecticut; facilitating political and business collaboration between Hungary and the United States; and introducing Hungarian culture and history to Americans.

Webster Bank VP receives Patriot Award

Webster Bank recently announced that Jackie Jamsheed, senior vice president of continuous improvement and operating risk management, has received the Department of Defense Patriot Award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. The award is given to a supervisor, and company, who support their Guard and Reserve employees and their families through flexible work schedules, time off, and overall support and understanding of the strains that long term deployments can have on family members.

CT construction marketing consultant awarded

Columbia's On Target Marketing & Communications LLC captured first place nationally for “Best Feature Writing,” in the Society for Marketing Professional Services 2013 Marketing Communications Awards. The feature article, Transforming Brownfields into Healthfields, was ghost-written by Theresa M. Casey, On Target's founding principal, for her client Miles Ballogg of Florida-based Cardno TBE. The article explains a developing trend of bundling new health-focused federal funding with brownfield renewal funding to redevelop abandoned buildings, while at the same time reducing health care disparities in underserved communities throughout the nation.

Engineer receives Women in Science Award

The Connecticut Science Center recently honored Kimberly McLean, principal engineer for Electric Boat, as the winner of the first annual Petit Family Foundation Women in Science Leadership Award. The new award, established as part of the Science Center's Celebrating Women in Science initiative, recognizes exceptional leadership in promoting participation and interest of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). For the past 16 years, McLean has volunteered for the Girl Scouts of Connecticut, developing her own annual events and activities. She is also a founding member of the Society for Women Engineers New England Shoreline Section.
