Zlotnick Construction Inc. is a general contractor that offers commercial, municipal, industrial, retail and institutional construction services.

Recent accomplishments:

We’ve recently completed a new, ground-up Big Y Supermarket in Marlborough and won a bid for an additional Big Y in Derby ($7 million and $6 million projects, respectively). Concurrently, we completed a very aggressive UConn dormitory bathroom remodel before the start of the new school year, and began a beautiful interior fit-out project in the new UConn Innovation Partnership Building ( $1.4 million and $1 million, respectively). Additionally, Greg Sr., Greg Jr. and the rest of the team had to step up and fill Peter Zlotnick’s void as he was deployed to the Middle East for approximately 10 weeks.

How do you remain competitive in the market?

This is a real challenge. Anyone can reach the top of the ladder, but staying there is the trick. Most of the time, the motivating factor with owners is money. One’s reputation is no doubt important when looking to be invited to submit a proposal and ultimately awarded a contract, however, if you’re 20 percent higher than others, your reputation will more than likely not get you the job.

We do our best to stay sharp with our numbers and constantly strive to find competitive companies to partner with when presenting clients with our proposals.

How can Connecticut improve its family business environment?

Less regulations and more sincere dialogue with all businesses — let us do what we do best. The “red tape” is getting out of control — it strangles businesses and is forcing companies and individuals to leave our state. We all lose when this happens, and it’s happening more and more.
