A Superior Court judge has ordered a new Democratic mayoral primary in Bridgeport, after candidate John Gomes filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the results of the original Sept. 12 primary in light of a video showing the Democratic Town Committee vice chairwoman apparently placing multiple absentee ballots into a drop box.
Mayor Joe Ganim defeated Gomes by 251 votes in the primary, but the judge ruled that Gomes’ claims of absentee ballot fraud merited a new election.
The ruling does not impact voting on Tuesday, but Gomes’ attorney has said if he wins the general election, the court case would become moot. Gomes will appear on Tuesday's ballot as the Independent Party's candidate for mayor.
The two sides and city election officials will come up with a date for a new primary by Nov. 17.
