Democrats in the General Assembly have proposed bills that would expand the state’s paid sick leave law to all private sector workers.
Under the proposals, all workers in Connecticut would be eligible for up to 40 hours of paid sick leave, depending on how many hours they work.
Currently, the state’s paid sick leave program only applies to companies with more than 50 workers.
In addition, the proposals would expand the categories of family members an employee may use paid sick leave to care for, including grandchildren.
They would also allow workers to use paid sick leave for counseling for a physical or psychological injury, or a disability.
Republican leaders expressed concerns about the proposals, calling them “tone deaf.”
A lobbyist for the Connecticut Business & Industry Association said the proposals, while well-intentioned, would have a negative impact on small businesses with few employees.
