Clover Corporation

In the 1970s, the construction industry’s small businesses were hit hard by energy shortages and rising costs. Despite the headwinds, the number of small businesses in the U.S. grew over 5.2% to 9.2 million.

Success in small business requires a thorough understanding of your target market and customers, effective marketing and good financial management. At the time, serving as director of commercial and industrial sales for Connecticut Natural Gas, Harry Cullinane knew the statistics: 22% of small businesses fail in the first year, 50% by year five. Despite holding a solid, well-paying job, he had the vision and passion for providing top-notch HVAC solutions to contractors and customers.

Educated as a mechanical engineer, Harry knew there was a market for the expertise he had developed in the gas industry at the American Gas Association and CNG. In partnership with his wife, Eileen, he established Clover Corporation to provide quality gas heating and cooling equipment in Connecticut and western Massachusetts. Their commitment to personal service and customer satisfaction laid the foundation for the company’s enduring success.

They became members of the New England Gas Association and sought SBA counseling and USPS training in marketing and mailing services. They joined the local heating and cooling contractors’ association (CHCC) and the area chapter of the Association of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) while getting established.

Cullinane encouraged his sons, Hank and Brian, to join the family business after they gained other experiences. Hank brought technical proficiency in infrared heating and gas cooling, while Brian added business management acumen. Their complementary skills, with the marketing skills honed by Eileen, enabled the business to reach new heights.

Harry died in 2017 having prepared his sons well for the takeover. It began in earnest in 2015 with the purchase of ample office and warehousing space to manage the company’s growing lines of equipment and to service its growing customer base and territory. While staying true to its commitment to quality and customer service, the company also diversified its portfolio.

With a keen eye on technological advancements, Clover Corporation continuously expanded its product lines to serve evolving needs of the changing HVAC landscape. Radiant heating, Robur gas absorption cooling and Reznor’s full line of commercial and industrial equipment were augmented by Allied Air’s Concord residential equipment and multifamily dwellings’ Magic Pak® systems.

Climate change is encouraging Clover’s new technological growth. Tecochill large tonnage gas cooling offers a hybrid system that operates on both gas and electricity; GREE, VRF inverter technology also addresses market change. Clover Corporation recognizes that the industry marked by constant change and evolution is writing the next chapter of its success story.

As Hank and Brian celebrate Clover’s 50th anniversary, they are filled with gratitude for the vision and dedication of the founders, and the loyal customer support and partnerships they have enjoyed. With Hank and Brian leading the charge, Clover Corporation remains committed to pushing the boundaries of the heating and cooling industry, delivering cutting-edge solutions and unparalleled service to customers.
