In the same year that saw Neil Armstrong travel to the moon, a friendship was forged here in Connecticut. Lou Bona and Leo Christmas were two young electricians who met on a job and something clicked. Soon, they were doing some traveling of their own. To grow their fledgling partnership, they would trail lumber trucks to job sites and ask to bid on the electrical work for the project. Thus Electrical Contractors Inc. was born in 1971.
That humble beginning led to a Hartford-based company that now works on multimillion-dollar projects. The company’s staff of 100 possesses the expertise to handle complex electrical jobs for business, institutional and educational clients. No wonder that companies like The Travelers commend Electrical Contractors for “providing a comprehensive array of electrical, data and voice-related activities with excellent results in a timely manner.” ECI is justly proud of its longevity.
“We’ve been around for 53 years. That says something,” CEO Louis J. Bona said.
ECI’s impressive portfolio includes landmark projects such as the State Legislative Office Building, UConn’s Gampel Pavilion, The Connecticut State Capitol Building, the new Bloomfield building for the Hartford Insurance Group, The Basketball Hall of Fame and the coming Hilton site in Bristol. The Hilton project comprises a DoubleTree Hotel, a Home2 Suites Hotel and a large event center connecting the two. Other clients include Hartford Hospital, Yale New Haven Health, and many public and private universities.
It takes a deep knowledge of the field to handle such substantial contracts. For more than half a century ECI’s experienced team has proven that they have the ‘right stuff.” According to one happy client, “If you are doing a large extremely complex project and you don’t use ECI you’re crazy.”
ECI not only builds electrical systems but stands at the ready to maintain them with a 24-hour call center. As the field of electronics changes, the company’s ability to adapt is key. ECI is at the forefront of energy-efficient technologies. Whether it is installing large-array solar, LED lighting, AI-controlled systems or EV chargers, the staff of ECI is on it.
ECI values diversity. The company’s pride in the variety of people on its staff is equal to the variety of challenges they meet on behalf of their clients. More than a third of ECI’s staff has been on board for over 25 years. ECI also is steadfastly committed to being a light for the community in its longtime Hartford home. The company’s charitable efforts include running a Christmas toy drive and a school supply drive to help its young neighbors. ECI also contributes electrical work to Habitat for Humanity projects in the city. And hosting an annual golf tournament for the Make-A-Wish Foundation is a sure way to put smiles on the faces of children and golfers alike.
The outstanding work done by ECI has been recognized with multiple awards from organizations like Associated Builders and Contractors, Independent Electrical Contractors and the Build Connecticut Awards. Continued excellence is what has made ECI a mainstay throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts
