Endow Hartford 21

Mission:

Endow Hartford 21 seeks to inspire donors to give generously to support the long-term future of the organizations they love.

Who Are You Helping, And How?

Endow Hartford 21 is a first-of-its-kind endowment matching program for Greater Hartford, initiated by the Zachs Family Foundation and supported by many community-minded lead donors. These donors stepped forward because they believe endowment can secure the future of Greater Hartford. Over 50 organizations were selected to participate in the first round, and 53 organizations will participate in the second match phase. The 1:2 match seeks to inspire donors to give generously to support the long-term future of the organizations they love. The Endow Hartford 21 match opportunity was first available to 51 local organizations between June 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022. Cumulatively, those organizations raised more than $1.3 million for their endowments, and in turn received a total of $567,399.60 in matching funds! Thirteen generous donors contributed $1.62 million in matching funds, which meant each of the organizations had the opportunity to receive $31,764.71 in matching funds. More than 600 community donors supported the endowments of these organizations, helping them build new sources of sustainable income for generations to come.

With leftover matching funds and a goal to raise more, Endow Hartford 21 will begin a second phase of the match, with 11 brand-new local organizations and 42 returning from the first round. This second match opportunity will be available from September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023 to the 53 participating organizations.

Giving Opportunities

There are two ways to support the organizations of Endow Hartford 21:

1) Contributing to the matching fund as a lead donor, in denominations of at least $10,000. These funds are critical to the program being able to match and multiply gifts.

2) Contributing to one or more of the participating agencies’ EH21 funds. All funds are held at either the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving or the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford, as decided by each organization; therefore, gifts must be made directly to the foundation that an organization has chosen. Gifts between $250 and $10,000 per donor per participating organization will be eligible for the 1:2 match.

Structural Impediments

One of the main goals of this program is to educate organizations and their donors on the importance of endowment giving. While annual support remains crucial to day-to-day operations, as it is every year, we simultaneously recognize the need for organizations to build for their future. An endowment creates a long-term resource that helps organizations sustain their missions during periods of revenue fluctuations.

“Thanks to Henry Zachs and the other generous matching donors, we were able to increase our endowment, a critical component of long-term stability. Mr. Zachs and the other donors created a community pool of funds that must be used as it was intended: to help other worthy organizations create and/or increase their endowments.” – Steve Collins President & CEO of Hartford Symphony Orchestra
