Interval House

MISSION:

Interval House is dedicated to ending domestic violence and providing services that will prevent and break the cycle of family and intimate partner abuse. We strive to reach all persons at risk and bring about social change.

Founded in 1977, Interval House is the largest agency in the State of Connecticut dedicated to ending domestic violence, offering free and compassionate services to victims in 24 cities and towns both East and West of the Connecticut River.

From its grass-roots beginnings in the basement of a Hartford church by women who wanted to help those suffering in silence, Interval House has long been committed to empowering clients, providing a nurturing and encouraging environment for victims to heal and reclaim their lives as survivors. Because the dynamics of domestic violence are complex and vary from victim to victim, Interval House is a comprehensive intervention and support program designed to provide clients services tailored to their individual needs, ultimately focusing on independence so they can live self-sufficient lives free from violence and fear.

Interval House’s 31 advocates and five administrators provide round- the-clock hotline response; safety planning and counseling; emergency safe house shelter; coordination with law enforcement to reach high risk victims; support groups for adults and children; court and legal advocacy; specialized assistance for immigrant and refugee victims; children’s programming; and community education.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS/OPPORTUNITIES

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed every year in October to raise awareness of our cause. A month-long fundraising campaign takes place online while several in person events are offered, including an awareness walk, a fundraising breakfast, and other educational happenings. More information available at www.intervalhousect.org. To inquire about sponsoring this highly visible and critical campaign, contact Amanda Delaura at 860-838-8461.

Step Up & Step Out Gala-- A black-tie affair with auctions, live music, and dancing—is held at The Society Room each Spring. More information available at www.intervalhousect.org. To sponsor the event or buy a table, contact Amanda Delaura at 860-838-8461.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES

Interval House cannot help victims without your support! A gift of unrestricted funds now or a bequest from your estate will make the biggest impact on our work. Or host a third party event to raise money for Interval House. Donate online at www.intervalhousect.org/donate or contact Amanda Delaura at 860-838-8461 for more info.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Our volunteer program is currently suspended due to concerns for the health and safety of our clients, staff, and helpers. In the meantime, members of the community can support Interval House by hosting a fundraiser on our behalf or by inviting one of our representatives to speak to your group. Please contact Amanda Delaura at 860-838-8461 to get involved.

POST-PANDEMIC

COVID-19 has greatly impacted workflow at Interval House, with calls to and from our hotline up 23% year over year and pandemic-related closures stymying safe re-housing of clients, calling on us to provide more than 14,000 bed nights. This heightened level of service cost us an unbudgeted $500,000 last year and is unsustainable without additional help from funders to support ramped up case management, which requires more staff overtime, more hotel bills, more meals, more transportation, and more spending. Normally we would re-evaluate skyrocketing expenses to stay on budget. But lives are at stake so we keep working.

“Interval House saved my life. If they hadn’t opened their arms to me during the pandemic, my sons and I would have been trapped in a violent home and I have no doubt I would have been killed by my husband, who used to threaten me every day with a knife. Thank God that is no longer our reality. Thank God for Interval House.”
