For nearly 60 years, Long Wharf Theatre has served as an anchor arts institution for the Greater New Haven region. Beloved for its championing of leading American playwrights, acclaimed for its artistic rigor and top talent, and respected for its diverse storytelling, Long Wharf has always been known as a bold, innovative institution. That character remains tried and true as Long Wharf Theatre embarks on its new journey to make the performing arts more accessible to audiences across the region.

In 2022, Long Wharf announced it would leave its long-time headquarters to produce works at community venues with the goal of reimagining its operations, reaching new audiences and reinvigorating the arts scene in New Haven. Since that courageous move, Long Wharf Theatre has welcomed audiences to experience sold-out, star-studded productions at libraries, resident homes and community centers with Joan Didion’s “The Year of Magical Thinking” and even telling Arthur Miller’s classic story “A View from the Bridge” from none other than the iconic Canal Dock Boathouse.

Led by artistic director Jacob G. Padrón and managing director Kit Ingui, Long Wharf is dedicating its efforts to redefine how a theater company shows up for and reflects its home community. The team has crafted strong partnerships with the city of New Haven, Yale University Southern Connecticut State University and other local organizations and leaders to fully activate stories that center marginalized groups and reimagine classic plays to represent diverse groups.

In the coming 60th anniversary season, audiences will be immersed in everything from tales of superheroes and classic romantic comedies to recollections of incarnation, all at venues specifically transformed to tell these meaningful stories. Long Wharf Theatre is eager to continue inviting new audiences to performances, hearing the community’s response to shows and evolving its model to best meet Connecticut’s needs for another 60 years to come.
