We build statewide capacity to prevent underage drinking and substance use and build strategic alliances to promote the overall well-being of Connecticut’s future workforce.
For over three decades, The Governor’s Prevention Partnership has been at the forefront of preventing youth substance use in Connecticut. What started as a focus on the effects of drugs in the workplace has evolved to respond to the emerging threats that face Connecticut’s young people, including vaping, marijuana, chronic absenteeism, alcohol, and bullying. In 2022, we continued our push to recruit mentors through the state’s Step-Up CT Mentoring Platform. At the same time, we elevated the voices that Connecticut’s children find to be the most credible – their peers. The Partnership hosted a large youth prevention summit, inviting young advocates from across the state to share stories, learn from one another and gain new skills from established prevention professionals to apply in their school communities. 2022 was a year of accomplishment for The Partnership. We recruited dozens of caring adults from around the state to join the mentoring movement and hosted rapid-response conversations on current events to provide critical community support. In addition to the youth summit, we expanded our peer-to-peer prevention efforts by bringing our E3 (Encourage, Empower, Engage) substance use prevention program into more schools. Plus, we increased the availability of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training for prevention organizations through a series of focused training sessions that involved over 100 attendees, many of whom attended several sessions.
Goal 1: Develop and launch Connecticut’s first statewide mentee referral portal.
Goal 2: Expand capacity of mentoring organizations to provide substance misuse-related guidance to Connecticut youth.
Goal 3: Train adults how to safely dispose of pharmaceuticals at home and provide innovative new technology to do so quickly and easily.
Goal 4: Increase the number of schools using our E3 peer-to-peer prevention program.
Goal 5: Raise awareness of the harms of substance misuse through large-scale community awareness and social media campaigns focused on highlighting young people telling their stories.
Every fall, The Governor’s Prevention Partnership hosts a partner recognition event. This year’s event is December 7th. If your business would like to get involved, please email Events@PreventionWorksCT.org.
"One of the honors of serving as Connecticut’s governor is continuing the tradition of serving as co-chair of The Governor’s Prevention Partnership. As the creator of our organization, former Governor O’Neill, told business leaders at its founding, no one sector can solve these problems alone — it takes an investment by business and government to make the changes needed."
