Shortly after women won the right to vote in the U.S., a group of prominent Hartford-area ladies came together to establish The Town & County Club. Since its inception 100 years ago, the club’s mission has been “To create an organized center for women’s work, thought and action; advancing the interests of women; promoting science, literature, and art.” These values continue to guide club initiatives to this day.
One hundred years later, members welcome interest in their inclusive private club where women connect through a variety of social, educational and community service experiences. Club members span generations and life experiences and have included trailblazers in the arts, education, publishing, law, healthcare and social advocacy. Today’s members engage in intellectual and cultural pursuits through enriching speaker programs, stimulating discussion groups, cultural tours, art exhibitions and so much more.
Members also engage collaboratively with community partners in service opportunities throughout the greater Hartford area. In addition, members’ philanthropic initiatives include a scholarship program that supports women pursuing college degrees later in life. Recipients must be at least 25 years old, live in the Hartford area, have some post-high school education and attend one of several local colleges and universities.
Started over 20 years ago, this scholarship program has awarded over $350,000 in scholarships to a total of 147 local women.
The club’s centerpiece is a beautiful mansion in the heart of Hartford’s historic West End. This architectural landmark serves as a “home away from home” where members enjoy meeting old and new friends. The elegant setting provides gracious spaces, including a library and parlors—perfect for enjoying tea or cocktails and conversation—as well as a private dining room, an art gallery and beautiful bedrooms for overnight accomodations. In addition, the club offers various meeting rooms and a spacious ballroom—perfect for special events. Members also have access to an extensive network of exclusive private clubs throughout the US and Europe.
“Our private women’s club offers a welcoming retreat where you can indulge in stimulating conversation, participate in enriching cultural activities and build lasting connections with diverse, like-minded women who will become not just acquaintances, but true confidantes and lifelong friends,” said one newer member, a mother of two young children.
Over the years, the club has adapted to broader demographic and cultural changes, refining its membership categories to accommodate the changing needs of women at different stages of their lives. It recently added a new category for women in their 40s, recognizing that the decade represents an age when women with time-compressed schedules may especially value the meaningful connections that come through membership in Town & County. The club also welcomes men interested in supporting its mission.
As the club celebrates its centennial in 2025, it plans a series of events designed to honor its ongoing commitment to educating and enriching the lives of women within and beyond its club community.
