Trinity Health Of New England’s Mission, to be a compassionate and transforming, healing presence within our communities, compels us to advocate for change to the structural and systemic policies that limit diversity and inclusion. Our Core Values of reverence, commitment to those who are poor, safety, justice, stewardship, and integrity guide our work to improve the health of all communities and dismantle barriers to inequities in health care.
As an integrated health care delivery organization, Trinity Health Of New England is building a system that puts the people we serve at the center of every behavior, action and decision. We advocate for public policies that support better health, better care and lower costs to ensure affordable, high quality, people-centered care for all. We have developed specific priorities to help eliminate systemic racism in our communities and throughout our colleague population:
• Advocate for racial justice: declare racism a public health crisis, address the racial inequities of COVID-19, and advance comprehensive care for all.
• Equitable compensation and talent management processes: review and update all policies and practices to reinforce and promote equity, and mitigate the impact of systemic racism.
• Reinforce culture of inclusion: mandatory annual cultural proficiency training for colleagues and de-escalation training for all security.
• Support through stewardship: 50 percent increase in diverse supplier spend over next three years.
We have over 11,000 colleagues throughout our organization that come from different backgrounds and bring with them unique perspectives and experiences. Having a workforce that is as diverse as the communities we serve is essential and helps maximize our full potential. Our strengths lie in our differences, and different thoughts and opinions are vital at every level, starting at the Board of Directors and moving through our ministry.
Being inclusive is an important component of my leadership style. I believe that inclusivity is built on the courage and commitment to connect with the heart and minds of others. It is the idea that begins with the understanding that every colleague, without exception, has a uniqueness to leverage, a strength to build upon, an interest to share, and an experience to honor. When I think about being inclusive, I think about the famous Benjamin Franklin quote, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”
Our focus on inclusivity was a motivator around our implementation of the Trinity Health Leadership System (THLS), a holistic approach to Lean, Six Sigma Management which focuses on continuous improvement by incorporating a more rigorous and hands-on approach to leadership. Every day, leadership goes to the Gemba, which means “going to the real place.” We walk units and workspaces with managers to check on progress in person, take meetings to the bedside, and to see colleagues in the midst of the action. Colleagues at every level are engaged in THLS and have the opportunity to provide new ideas and feedback. THLS has had a profound impact on our inclusive culture, which directly and positively impacts the care we provide to our patients.
