United We Recover

From the desk of Paula S. Gilberto, President and CEO, United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut

Summer is off to a hot start, and with it, a return to much loved pre-pandemic activities. One can almost sense a collective sigh of relief as family and friends get together, co-workers see each other in-person instead of online, and children enjoy summer activities.

While there is much to celebrate, there is also much to do as for many children and families, the health and economic impacts of COVID-19 will be long-lasting. State and federal COVID-19 resources have been made available to school districts, municipalities, and nonprofit agencies. While significant, these funds are intended to complement current philanthropic investments to meet increased need. We are working with community partners to maximize public and private resources.

The last 16 months have underscored the importance of taking care of ourselves and each other. It is critical that we carry that energy forward as we work to build back better to address increased needs in innovative ways.

United Way’s mission is to engage and bring together people and resources committed to the well-being of children and families in our community and that work is as important today as it has ever been.

United Way recently awarded $3 million to trusted community programs that will focus on:

  • Youth Success: Summer learning and enrichment programs for children who experienced a challenging school year, and quality early childhood education and early literacy programs aimed at students reading proficiently by the start of fourth grade.
  • Economic Mobility: Employment programs that help people get good jobs with opportunities for career advancement along with financial education and opportunities to build savings.
  • Basic Needs: Rent, utility and food assistance, and a connection to important income supports, such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), that help families struggling to make ends meet stretch their monthly budgets.

When you give to United Way, you are supporting a network of partners who are working together to meet the complex needs of people in our region, efficiently and effectively to build a better and more equitable future for everyone. With the help of more than 6,000 volunteers, 30,000 donors, and the strength of our community partners, we are up for the challenge. United Way was built for this: join us in whatever way works for you – give your dollars... give your time ... – do both.

Now more than ever, we need to LIVE UNITED. Visit www.unitedwayinc.org today to get involved.
